Moravcova Rewrites History of the FINA World Cup Series with Her 100th Win

MOSCOW, Russia, January 27, 2005 – Four-time Olympian and a two-time silver medalist from Sydney Martina Moravcova became the first swimmer in the history of the FINA Swimming World Cup Series to win incredible 100 gold medals.  She is also the overall winner of the World Cup Series three of the last four years.

 

During the sixth leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2004-05 Series in Moscow, Martina won the 100m butterfly (57.08), 100m individual medley (1,00.87), 50m butterfly (26.77), and finished second in the 50m (24.79) and 100m (54.47) freestyle.  On Wednesday she won the second 50 m butterfly gold medal just a few minutes after she won the 100m individual medley race.

 

Here is a quick overview of her success in the FINA Swimming World Cup Series:

  • 1993-94:  3 gold medals

  • 1994-95:  3 gold medals

  • 1999-00:  7 gold medals

  • 2000-01:  27 gold medals ***overall winner

  • 2001-02:  24 gold medals ***overall winner

  • 2002-03:  10 gold medals

  • 2003-04:  12 gold medals ***overall winner

  • 2004-05:  15 gold medals (without results from New York and Rio de Janeiro).

 

At the FINA World Cup 4 in Stockholm from January 18-19, Martina won the 100m butterfly and 100m individual medley, in 57.25 and 1,01.06, respectively.  A few days later she bettered her times in the same events at the World Cup 5 in Berlin in 57.15 and 1,00.81, respectively.

 

The World and European Champion and the winningest female swimmer of the Old continent in short course,  Martina will next appear at the World Cup in New York City from February 11-12, 2005, and the long course World Championships from July 17-31, 2005, with the location still undetermined.

 

Martina is a native of Slovakia, and a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she earned her Bachelors in Business Administration and Masters in Applied Economics.  During her collegiate career at SMU, she became the second winningest female swimmer in the NCAA history with 10 individual and 4 team NCAA titles.  For more information please visit www.martinamoravcova.com.
